Spine-chilling!
I've always been a fan of horror stories, and since Halloween just passed, Tales of the Macabre by Edgar Allan Poe was a perfect choice for a reading material!
Tales of the Macabre contains a dozen of Edgar Allan Poe's morbid short stories. It includes Berenice, The Black Cat, The Island of the Fay, The Tell-Tale Heart and The Fall of the House of Usher, among others.
If I were to choose one favorite story, it would be Berenice, because the narrator starts out showing affection for Berenice, but the whole story ends up in a thrilling discovery of what the narrator has done due to his fixation on Berenice's teeth.
Edgar Allan Poe delivers the stories in such a way that toys with the mind and makes the reader wonder what the story was all about, up until the last part where everything is unraveled and the horror is revealed. When everything falls into place, it's when the spine-tingling fear sets in, and I just love it.
Personally, I find this particular adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe's short stories as especially creepy and morbid because it includes illustrations by Benjamin Lacombe. If the reader wants to re-tell Poe's stories to scare young children, the illustrations would be really helpful! Although, of course, I highly recommend that some parts of the stories be censored because of the sensitive content.
