[Filipino Reader Con] #PBD - Pinoy Book Drop Preparation!

The Pinoy Book Drop Activity is actually from Filipino Reader Con. The mechanics of the activity are simple, and you can read them HERE.

I decided to join the activity because it seemed like a great way to spread the love for the written word. So the other day, I prepared the books that I was going to give away for the book drop. I had to settle for two: Through Violet Eyes by Stephen Woodworth and My True Friends by Ramon Bautista.

Most of my books are actually kept at home and I only had a handful with me in the apartment so I could only give away two books. I have yet to read the other books in the apartment so I couldn't give them away.

[Linking Up] Feature and Follow #36

What are some of your favorite magazines?

Otakuzine! Hands down! I'm not really into magazines but I previously collected Otakuzine to feed my Anime Addiction and of course, I read the occasional FHM. Hee.

[Filipino Friday] Kids and Books

What were your favorite books as a kid?
The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett! It was one of the very first books I've ever read. (The others being Arthur S. Maxwell's Ten Volume of Bible Stories. I also loved reading the Replica Series by Marilyn Kaye. Those were my first taste of Middle-Grade Sci-Fi. And then of course, there's Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving and my several books of Buffy the Vampire Slayer written by different authors. Hee.

Do you still read children’s books?
Yes! I just recently finished reading and reviewing Guardians of Tradition, and I have a six-year old little brother so I still read children's books. In fact, my brother has been bugging me to buy new children's books. Haha!

If you would give a book to your younger self, what would it be?
I'd give my younger self The Perks of a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky, along with the message that says, "It's okay to be different. You don't have to conform to how everybody else acts. The people who matter will still love you for who you are." (Which translates to: it's okay being a boyish nerd. haha!)

Review:
Fascinating, colorful and educational!

I've always been fascinated by art in whatever form. Although I use words as my main tool for expression, I've also been dabbling in paints and brushes. Basically, I don't really care if it's something as mundane as photographs or as weird as surrealist pieces. When it comes to art, the most important thing is to express. And when it comes to indigenous art, part of our responsibility as the new generation is to preserve it. In Guardians of Tradition, it's obvious that this was one of the goals of author Mae Astrid Tobias when she worked on the book -- something which I really applaud her for doing. I mean, just looking at the book, I could tell that much work and time was put into it.

In Guardians of Tradition, the reader is introduced to the different indigenous folk artists in the Philippines through Kiko and Banog, a cute little boy and his friend Eagle. The book combined the rich tradition of a colorful country with modern caricature as it introduced the "Manlilikha ng Bayan" -- a title bestowed to the master weavers, folk musicians, performing artists, mat weavers and metal smiths who are instrumental in preserving indigenous arts in the Philippines.

I really appreciate the attention that was given to each Manlilikha ng Bayan. Aside from art lessons, this book included history lessons as well, but it kept everything short that it wasn't boring to read at all. Also, the pictures in the book and the caricatures of Kiko and Banog were eye-catching, which is perfect for children readers. I also love the suggested activities that were perfect for toddlers, especially ones with artistic inclinations! The activities were related to the indigenous arts that were depicted in the book, yet they were simple enough for children.

I was most especially drawn to Federico Caballero, one of the Manlilikha ng Bayan featured in the book, because he's from my province! He can chant ten epics in Kiniray-a, a dialect from the Philippines. I was kind of hoping that a short part of a Kiniray-a epic was included in the book so that I could read it, too. According to the book, Kiniray-a is a language that is no longer spoken, but the truth is from where I reside, we speak Kiniray-a. Of course, we don't speak the old version of the dialect as it has since evolved, but I believe that the unique characteristics and tone of Kiniray-a were preserved. In fact, in Iloilo, it's very easy for people to tell if someone is speaking Kiniray-a because of its distinct sound and intonation.

All in all, I really love reading Guardians of Tradition. I love its pages, its contents and even the cute tour guides (Kiko and Banog) who played a part in engaging the reader. Not only does Guardians of Tradition share information about art, in a way it also spreads love for the Filipino culture and appreciation for indigenous arts.

EXCERPT:

What is the Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan?

Filipinos are very artistic people. All over the county, you find people who love to sing, dance, paint, write, play musical instruments, and create the most beautiful things the way their forebears have taught them. There are also special people who spend their entire lives making sure that these traditional arts are not forgotten.

The Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan was created in 1992 through Republic Act No. 7355 in order to let the whole Philippines know about these people and their art. (p. 4)

Uwang Ahadas, Maestro of Yakan Music

Uwang Ahadas always wears a pair of dark glasses. He lost his eyesight when he was only five. But he does not let his disability keep him from becoming a master of Yakan music.

Together with his siblings, he learned to play different instruments like the gabbang and the agung. The instrument called the kwintangan kayu is supposed to be played by women only, but Ahadas broke this tradition and learned how to play this.

Ahadas wants children to learn to play instruments while they are young because their hands and wrists are still flexible. He teaches them by showing them his techniques.

Even when working in the fields, the Yakans play their musical instruments. One of these instruments is the gabbang. Small children play it to shoo away animals from planted crops. It looks like a xylophone, but it is made of five bamboo slats.

Another instrument is the kwintangan kayu which is made of five wooden logs hung horizontally under a tree near a ricefield. It is played to make the rice plants grow faster.

Suggested activity:

Blind people have keener senses of touch, sound, taste, and scent. Try to find out how it feels to be blind by getting a handkerchief and covering your eyes. Notice the sounds, smells, textures, and taste of the things around you.

[AU - Anime] Blood Lad

AU stands for Alternate Universe, which could also mean "alternate reality". AU depicts an entirely different reality than the canon or official universe where a character in a book or movie lives or exists. Example: Canon - Harry Potter is a wizard studying in Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry; AU - Harry Potter is an ordinary teenager with a knack for science, and is studying at the Michigan Institute of Technology.

The objective of AU is simple: blog about something other than books for at least once a month. It could be about movies, food, fashion, TV shows, etc., just as long as it's not about books.

The following are the reasons why I decided to include a non-book post in this blog:
  1. The world is vast, and there is a need to get acquainted with other things, too.
  2. Information-sharing.
  3. Outlet for inner geek. Hee.
For the first AU post, I'm featuring the anime series Blood Lad!

Blood lad is a 10-episode anime series which aired from July 7, 2013 to September 8, 2013, so it's fairly new. It is based on a manga (Japanese comics) of the same title created by Yuuki Kodama.

It features the main characters Staz Charlie Blood, a noble-bloodied vampire, and Fuyumi Yanagi, a human girl who wanders off to the demon world.

I finished watching Blood Lad last September and was quite surprised by how quirky it was! I was expecting a dark sort of anime because it featured vampires and demons, but surprisingly, it was really funny, heartwarming and insane!

For me, the best thing about blood lad is Staz, because he isn't a typical vampire. He's one of the territory bosses of the East Demon World so he's strong but that's just the tip of the iceberg in his strength. He's a tyrant, he loves reading mangas, he loves playing computer games and he doesn't hunger for human blood. See?! He's just awesome!

The side-characters and their powers are awesome, too! Plus, the intersecting lives are really colorful. A bit of warning though, this anime is a little ecchi. After all, it features anime girls with big boobs, and frequently shows panty-shots. Nothing majorly scandalous, though. *winks*

The only downside I found with this anime is that it only has 10 episodes, which is too short to really have any major arc in it. I was hoping for more episodes, but alas, I do not control the world. Also, the ending was really hanging that I was a bit disappointed. *hoping for Season 2*

[Linking Up] Feature & Follow #34

What book (or TV show or movie) have you not read that seemingly everyone else has?

I'd have to go with Divergent by Veronica Roth. I'm not really sure though because I haven't been paying attention to the books that other people have been reading. LOL. But I'm planning on reading it one of these days.

[Personal Update] Happy 1st Blogoversary, Book Junkie Joint!

Book Junkie Joint's first lay-out.
I can't believe that it's already been a year since I started this blog! How fast time flies~!

I was thinking of having a blogoversary giveaway but had no time to arrange it last September because of the many things I had to do. Plus, I have to prepare for a trip to Manila on the 5th of October for our Bar Operations to support this year's bar exam takers. Whew~!

But!! I *might* hold one giveaway within this month. I still have to gather the prizes and prepare a swag bag. I wonder what I'll give away. Hmmm... =)

Anyways, I'm really thankful to the people I've met online through this blog, and to the people who shared my love for books and reading. Thank you so much for making my life a little more colorful~!
