Granny Is My Wingman chronicles Kayli’s and Granny’s misadventures in online dating. What ensues is a hilarious tour through the obstacles of modern love: drunken hookups, late-night Facebook stalking, breathy phone calls with geriatric suitors, and the occasional rude dude. While Kayli powers through a marathon of OkCupid dates—the corporate drone married to his BlackBerry, the nail-biting thirty-three-year-old who still lives at home with his mom, the serial online dater—we learn about Granny’s romantic past and the bittersweet affair she carried on, even while married, for more than thirty years. The two women cheer each other on and become even closer as they share their dating exploits, learning that the hunt for happiness is the same whether you’re twenty-five or seventy-five.
Fresh, funny, and honest, Granny Is My Wingman is a book for anyone who has ever found love, lost it, and been crazy enough to do it all over again.
Personally, I don't think I'll be trying online dating soon, and that's not because I think of it negatively. Dating in general is not something I'm up to. (And that is entirely attributable to me being selectively social. LOL.)
What do I love about this book? I love Granny! She's not your typical acerbic grandmother! True, she has her eccentricities but I love that she's up for online dating even at her age. Most old people I know wouldn't even bother trying to learn how to use a computer, or even a celphone, and would rather settle into a dull routine instead of challenging themselves to try something new. In this personal account, I love how quirky and fun granny was. I also love how she freely doles out advice to her granddaughter and even going as far as to share her own story of infidelity. I am not in favor of infidelity, but there was definitely a lesson to be learned in Granny's indiscretion.
And the dates were hilarious! They weren't laugh out loud funny for me, but they were definitely entertaining. This personal account just goes to show that if you're just open to meeting new people, the world can surprise you in a lot of ways. Most of the dates in this book were disastrous, but thinking about them would definitely bring a smile on your face.
The only downside to this book is that some part were dragging and I had to force myself to read through them. I'd have to say that this story isn't a page-turner, but it's a charming book full of dating lessons and funny bits.
